The topic of songwriting, from where I’m sitting, is primarily concerned with communicating an idea and therefore, is predominantly lyrically driven. My favorite songwriters were always the artists who had something to say. They were poetic but blunt, and they took you on a journey. I love to be plugged into the story-line. When I sit down to write a song I’m thinking of how to say what I want in a way that moves the listener into my thought process. I spend a large portion of my time wrestling over the lyrics and subject matter. I think that’s why I dig Hymns so much. There are sometimes, 5-6 stanzas and by the end of the tune, your head and your heart are about to explode.
In his letter to the believers in Colosse, the Apostle Paul says to teach or admonish one another through the medium of music. Music not only communicates ideas, it is supposed to communicate absolute truths. It is the primary vehicle to carry the Word of God and the truth of Scripture. It is supposed to elevate and propel the revelation and knowledge of Jesus.
For instance, when you turn the truth that Jesus is the Messiah into a melody and sing it back to the Lord, it has an effect on two different fronts. First, singing this truth transforms the human emotions and plumb lines the soul with the Word of God. In other words, you could say, it is a kind of singing seminary. And secondly, in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, where Scripture’s authority is being attacked by doubting men, singing this truth back to God is a pleasant aroma to His heart. Songs that are sung from sincere motives actually move the heart of God!
Also, in Ephesians 5:18, the Apostle Paul says that the key to being filled with the Holy Spirit is by singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, and making melody to the Lord. In other words, Paul says that singing to the Lord serves an important role in being filled with the Spirit of Holiness.
Therefore, as a worship leader and songwriter, I consider it a great privilege to lead the body of Christ to join the song of heaven, singing, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing” (Rev. 5:12)
